Weatherstripping is the soft strip in the door frame that the door presses against when it closes. When it flattens, cracks or tears, the house starts losing air through a gap you can often see: a line of daylight along the edge, a whistle on windy nights, dust on the floor by the threshold. KapMorgan replaces door weatherstripping across Los Angeles — front doors, back doors, garage entry doors and doors to the patio — and makes sure the door actually seals on the new strip instead of just looking new. Weatherstripping is one of the small fixes we handle as part of door repair and adjustment, and it is usually done in a single short visit.

Weatherstripping or a Door That Needs Adjusting?
Not every draft is a seal problem. If the door has dropped on its hinges or the latch no longer pulls it tight, even brand-new weatherstripping will leave a gap at the top corner or along the latch side. That is why we look at how the door sits before replacing anything: we check the gap with the door closed, how hard the latch has to be pushed, and whether the bottom clears the threshold. If the strip is torn, crushed flat or missing, we replace it. If the door itself has moved, we adjust the hinges or the strike so it closes onto the seal — sometimes that alone is enough, and you save the cost of a new strip.

Door Weatherstripping Guide
Most modern prehung doors use kerf-in weatherstripping: a foam or silicone bulb on a flat leg that presses into a narrow slot cut in the frame. It comes out by hand and the new strip goes into the same slot, which keeps the job quick and tidy. Older wood frames often have no slot at all; on those we use a strip that is fastened or adhered to the stop, chosen to match the gap. Brush-pile seals suit doors where the gap changes along the frame, and steel doors often take a magnetic seal that grips the door face.
Weatherstripping only works when the door closes on it with even pressure. A strip that is too thick makes the door hard to latch, and the latch side starts to wear early; a strip that is too thin leaves the gap open. We fit the profile to the real gap, then close and latch the door several times. With the lights off inside, any light left around the frame shows where the seal is still not touching.
The bottom of the door is part of the same job. A worn door sweep or a threshold that has sunk lets air and water in under the door even when the sides are sealed, so we check both. In Los Angeles the drafts are not the whole story: summer heat, dust and insects get in through the same gaps, and an air-conditioned house loses cool air through them all season.

Door Weatherstripping FAQ
Weatherstripping and the bottom sweep for one door start at $95. If the threshold also needs replacing, it is $110. We confirm the exact price from your photos before the visit.
Close the door with the lights off inside and look at the edges. If you see daylight, feel air moving or the seal is cracked, flat or peeling, it is time to replace it.
Yes. Doors without a kerf get a strip that is fastened or adhered to the door stop, sized to the real gap so the door still latches easily.
Usually the door has shifted and no longer presses on the seal at one corner, or the bottom sweep or threshold is worn. We adjust the hinges or the strike and check the bottom as part of the job.
One door usually takes about an hour, including the close-and-latch test. Several doors can be done in the same visit.
Yes, we replace the seals and brush strips on sliding patio doors as well. Send a photo of the door edge so we can bring the right profile.
Yes. Send photos and a few words about the problem and we reply with a clear price. When the actual job differs from the photos, the price follows the actual work. On-site estimate: free when we do the job the same visit, otherwise $75 service call.
