Hinges carry the whole weight of a door, and most door trouble starts there. When the screws loosen or strip out of the jamb, the door drops a few millimetres on the latch side, starts rubbing the frame at the top corner and stops latching cleanly. A hinge that has worn on its pin squeaks or lets the door wobble. KapMorgan repairs and replaces door hinges in Los Angeles on interior and exterior doors: we find which hinge has moved, fix the screw holes so they hold again, swap worn hinges for new ones of the same size and finish, and re-hang the door so it swings and closes without force. Hinge work is part of our door repair and adjustment service and usually takes one short visit.

    Sagging door

Why a Door Sags and How the Hinge Is Fixed

A door sags when the top hinge loses its grip. The screws that hold it go into the jamb, and after years of slamming they loosen the wood around them until they spin in place. The door then hangs from the middle and bottom hinges, tilts toward the latch side and starts rubbing the head of the frame. Tightening the screw again does not help, because there is nothing left for it to bite into. We fill and re-drill the stripped holes or use longer screws that reach the framing behind the jamb, so the hinge holds for years. If the hinge itself is bent or worn on the pin, we replace it with one of the same size, so the door sits exactly where it was.

“I had door trim replaced around two of my interior doors. One of the doors also needed two of the (spring) hinges replaced. I was able to text photos and get a quick estimate without needing to schedule a visit for that. Service was prompt and friendly and I got a really good looking result. Would use again.”

    Door hinge guide

    Door Hinge Repair Guide

Most residential doors in Los Angeles hang on three 3.5-inch or 4-inch hinges, with either square or rounded corners. A replacement hinge has to match the size and the corner shape, otherwise it will not sit in the existing mortise and the door moves. We bring the common sizes and finishes and match the hinges already on the door, so the new one looks like the others.

Squeaky hinges are usually dry or worn on the pin. A dry hinge is cleaned and lubricated; a worn one that lets the door wobble is replaced. Spring hinges that close a door by themselves are adjusted for tension, and replaced when the spring has gone weak. On heavy entry doors we often use one long screw per hinge that reaches the wall framing, which stops the door from sagging again.

A hinge problem often shows up somewhere else first: the latch no longer meets the strike, the door scrapes the floor or the top corner rubs. That is why we check how the door hangs before replacing anything. Sometimes the fix is a single re-anchored screw, and the price reflects that.

    FAQ

    Door Hinge Repair FAQ

Hinge repair or replacement starts at $125 per door, with all hinges of the door checked. If the jamb itself is split, frame repair starts at $150.

The top hinge has usually pulled loose. We re-anchor its screws into solid wood or the framing behind the jamb and re-hang the door level, so it stops rubbing and latches again.

The hole is filled with hardwood and re-drilled, or a longer screw is used that reaches the framing. Both hold far better than a larger screw in the same worn hole.

A dry or worn hinge pin. Dry hinges are cleaned and lubricated; worn ones are replaced so the door stops squeaking and wobbling.

Yes. We match the size, the corner shape and the finish, so the new hinge fits the existing cut-out and looks like the others.

Yes. Send photos of the hinge side and the gap at the top. If what we find on the visit differs from the photos, the price follows the actual work. An on-site estimate is free when we do the job the same visit, otherwise it is a $75 service call.
