A door sweep is the strip along the bottom of the door that closes the gap to the threshold. Without one, or with one that has worn down, you get a line of light under a closed door, ants and spiders finding their way inside, dust building up on the floor and, on the first rainy day, water running in under an exterior door. KapMorgan installs door sweeps and bottom seals on front doors, back doors, garage entry doors and interior doors in Los Angeles. A sweep is a small part, but it has to be set at the right height: too low and the door scrapes, too high and the gap stays open. It is one of the quick fixes in our door repair work.

Door Sweep, Bottom Seal or a New Threshold?
The gap under a door has two sides: the door and the threshold under it. A sweep closes the gap from the door side and suits most doors where the threshold is in good shape. Some doors take a bottom seal instead — a U-shaped boot that wraps the bottom edge and seals on the threshold. When the threshold itself has worn, sunk or cracked, a sweep alone will not fix it, and we replace the threshold or add a threshold strip first. We look at both before choosing, so you do not pay for a part that cannot close the gap.

Door Sweep Installation Guide
Most exterior doors take a screw-on sweep: an aluminum or vinyl strip fastened to the inside face of the door with a flexible fin or brush that reaches the threshold. Doors that already have a channel in the bottom edge take a slide-on seal instead, which sits under the door and is invisible from inside. On doors where water is the main problem, a sweep with a drip edge sheds rain away from the gap instead of letting it run under the door.
Height is what makes a sweep work. We close the door, set the fin so it just touches the threshold along its whole length, then open and close the door over the floor — tile, wood or a rug inside — to make sure it clears. If the floor is uneven, a brush sweep follows it better than a solid fin. A door that has dropped on its hinges can also leave a gap at one corner; we adjust it in the same visit when that is the cause.
An exterior door sweep also keeps out insects and the fine dust that blows in during dry, windy weeks, and it helps an air-conditioned house hold its temperature. Interior doors get sweeps too: to block light into a bedroom, noise from a laundry room, or a draft from a garage. Whatever the door, the price is confirmed from your photo before we come.

Door Sweep FAQ
A door sweep with a check of the side weatherstripping starts at $95 per door. If the threshold is worn and needs replacing, it is $110.
A sweep fastens to the face of the door and reaches down to the threshold. A bottom seal wraps around or slides into the bottom edge of the door. Both close the gap; which one fits depends on the door and the threshold.
Close the gap at the bottom: a new sweep or bottom seal, set so it touches the threshold. If the threshold has sunk or cracked, it needs replacing as well.
A sweep with a drip edge and a sound threshold stops most rain from getting in. If water still comes in, the threshold or the slope at the door needs a closer look, and we check it on the visit.
Yes. Interior sweeps block light, noise and drafts, for example from a garage or a laundry room.
The sweep was set too low or the floor rises inside. We set the height to the threshold and test the door over the floor so it opens freely.
Yes. One photo of the bottom of the door is usually enough for an exact price by text. If the door turns out different from the photo, the price follows the actual work. An on-site estimate is free when we do the job the same visit, otherwise it is a $75 service call.
