A smart lock replaces the key with a code, a fingerprint or your phone. Most of them fit an ordinary deadbolt hole, so the job looks simple, and the box says it takes 15 minutes. In practice the most common complaint after a self-install is a lock that jams, drains batteries in a month or only locks when the door is pushed. That happens when the bolt does not slide freely into the frame, so the motor has to fight it. KapMorgan installs smart locks in Los Angeles on front doors, back doors and garage entry doors: we fit the lock, line up the bolt and strike so the motor runs without strain, calibrate it and connect it to your phone. It is part of our locks and door hardware service.

Smart Locks on Older Doors
Smart locks are made for a standard deadbolt hole and backset, but plenty of doors in Los Angeles were drilled for older or unusual hardware: a mortise lock, a different backset, a thick door, a handleset that shares holes with the deadbolt, or old holes from previous locks. Most of these can still take a smart lock. We check the holes and the door thickness from your photo, tell you which locks fit, and on the visit we adapt the holes or the strike as needed. If a lock you bought cannot fit the door, we tell you before you open the box, so you can return it.

Choosing and Installing a Smart Lock
There are two kinds of smart locks. Full replacement locks swap the whole deadbolt, inside and out, and usually come with a keypad. Retrofit locks keep the outside of the existing deadbolt and replace only the inside part, so your keys still work. Both need a door where the bolt slides into the strike without rubbing, because a small motor turns it.
Alignment is what decides how long the lock lasts. If the door has sagged, the bolt rubs the top or bottom of the strike hole, the motor works harder and the batteries run down. We adjust the door or the strike first, then test the bolt by hand before the lock is mounted. A lock that runs freely by hand runs freely on the motor.
Wi-Fi locks need a signal at the door; some use a small bridge plugged in nearby. We set up the app with you, add codes for family, cleaners or tenants, and show you how to change the batteries and use the backup key or power option.
